Neighborhood Mapping
Revealing Cultural Identity
through Art, Design
and Geography
Understanding the history, legacy and memories of a place is one of the first steps toward the process of addressing larger issues of economic opportunity, equity and social justice.
Anchor 1

The Porch is the Tree is the Watering Hole is an art exhibit centered on the Sistrunk neighborhood,

an historic black community in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We were invited to collaborate with a group

of artists to showcase works of art, design, architecture and geography that examines the significance

of gathering spaces and cultural influences in the black community.

For Black History Month, CBS 4 News Miami featured the exhibit

as part of a series of special reports in February. Watch the video below:

MAPPING THE NEIGHBORHOOD

EXPERIENCE

The Sistrunk Corridor Map is intended to introduce the exhibition audience to the locations of significant landmarks, heritage sites and public spaces in the community. In designing the map, we combined geographic technology with elements of graphic design to create an engaging visual experience.

IDENTIFY CULTURAL

LANDMARKS

The use of aerial imagery, field visits and resident interviews helped to build the inventory of culturally significant places that appear on the map.

DEFINE

NEIGHBORHOOD

BOUNDARIES

Starting from the intersection

of Sistrunk Blvd and NW 9th Ave,

the boundaries were defined by the major roadways and natural features that bisect the neighborhood.

HIGHLIGHT

PUBLIC SPACES

A neutral palette was applied to blocks and buildings, while a pop of contrasting color was added to public spaces

to highlight points of social gathering.
